Fees for Individuals

Individual appraisal services are available upon request. Appraisals can be for antique, vintage or new quilts as well as wearable art. A typed appraisal with a photo of the item will be sent within 30 days of the inspection. The owner of the quilt must be present during the appraisal or send a letter stating their consent to have the quilt appraised. Any known information about the history of the quilt and maker should be provided. Currently each appraisal is $40. A discount will be given for 10 or more quilts. Quilts may be brought to Kathy's home for inspection (appointments are necessary). Any travel outside of Springfield will be paid by the quilt owner at the current allowable federal mileage reimbursement rate. To make an appointment for an appraisal, please contact Kathy by email or phone.

Fees for Groups

Contracts: Kathy is available to provide lectures, workshops, appraisal services and judging services. To secure a date, a signed contract must be part of any agreement between Kathy Kansier and the contracting group. A non-refundable deposit of $100.00 must accompany a contract. This deposit will be forfeited if a lecture or workshop is canceled for any reason by the sponsoring group. Two copies of a typed contract will be sent by Kathy to the representative of the contracting group. One signed copy must be returned to Kathy. The following information is for guilds, shows and quilt shops wishing to acquire her services

Minimum Work Requirement: Traveling away from home takes an extra time commitment on Kathy's part. In fairness to her family, a minimum of $800 in combined services must be contracted for services more than three hours from her home. This minimum work requirement does not include Kathy's travel expenses. This $800 minimum is easily reached by booking a lecture and workshop, a lecture and appraisal services, judging and appraisal services or any combination of her work.

Judging Services: Kathy's fee for judging quilt shows is $400.00 per day. Kathy prefers the elimination method of judging. She provides 5-7 written comments per quilt. Volunteers are needed for the judging process. The volunteers will help with clerical duties as well as holding up and folding quilts. After contracting this service, Kathy will provide written information for volunteers and a judging comment sheet. Limited consultation time is available free of charge to help in establishing entry rules, categories and organizing the judging floor process. To allow ample time for each entry, a maximum of 125 quilts per day can be judged in a day. Kathy is experienced in judging alone and in judging with a team of judges. A workshop or appraisal services should be added to Kathy's contract to meet her minimum work requirement.

Appraisal Services: Currently Kathy's fee for written appraisals is $40. Her appraisals are typed and include a photo of the quilted textile. The appraisals are sent within two weeks of the inspection. The sponsoring group is in charge of all advertising of the service, making appraisal appointments, collecting the fees and providing a private area for Kathy to conduct the appraisals. For large shows or guilds, 1-2 volunteers may be needed to assist Kathy. Appraisal appointments should be made every 30 minutes. A waiting list is acceptable for cancelled time slots. After contracting this service, additional information will be sent for advertising and setting up the appraisal service. When advertised, this service attracts the general public to quilt shows and museums. It is also a good service to provide for guild members. Appraisals can be for antique, vintage and new quilts as well as wearable art. For quilt shows, quilts may appraised while hanging in the show or brought from home for an appraisal.

Lectures: Kathy's lectures are 45 - 60 minutes in length. Some lectures are trunk shows and require extra shipping and insurance charges to ship quilts. The sponsoring guild or show will be responsible for these extra charges and notified in advance of their estimated charges. A podium, microphone and two tables will be needed for each lecture. Some lectures require an overhead projector. If available, 2 quilt stands will be used to display quilts. Kathy's lecture fees are $400.00 per lecture plus roundtrip shipping costs for trunk shows.

Workshops: Kathy prefers teaching all-day and two-day workshops to allow the students more design and sewing time. When teaching at a retreat, the daily fees apply. Some workshops have a pattern or kit fee. These fees will be listed on the supply list and contract. Pattern or kit fees are in addition to the workshop fee and are paid by the students directly to Kathy on the day of the class. Required patterns are sold at a discount to students. Pre-packaged kits help to reduce the student supply list. A maximum of 20 students are allowed in each workshop. An additional 10 students may be added at $25 each. All-day workshops are 6 hours (from 8:30 to 4:00 with an hour lunch break). To save time, students should bring a lunch, bring a dish to pass or lunch can be catered in. Two students may share a table. A separate ironing station and cutting area can be shared by 3-4 students. Kathy's half-day workshops are 3 ½ hours in length. Supply lists and advertising information will be sent with a contract. Her workshop fees are as follows:

  • 2008 All-day workshop - $575.00

  • 2008 Half-day workshop - $375.00

  • 2009 All-day workshop - $600.00

  • 2009 half-day workshop - $375.00

Publication Sales: Kathy's patterns and books will be available for sale after her lectures and workshops. Because Kathy provides these at a discounted rate for guilds, the guild will not expect to collect any additional commission on these sales. She will donate a publication for the guild's library.

Travel: Travel arrangements will be made by Kathy. For airfares, Kathy searches for the least expensive flights, well in advance of her trip. Prior to purchasing a ticket, she contacts the guild representative for final authorization. Once ticket is purchased and the receipt sent to the guild, reimbursement is needed in advance of the trip. Round-trip ground transportation to the airport will be reimbursed at the current allowable federal mileage reimbursement rate at the time of the presentation. The rate for 2008 is .505/mile. Airport parking will also be reimbursed. For driving to guilds, round-trip mileage is also reimbursed at the current allowable federal mileage reimbursement rate. Kathy's husband sometimes travels with her, especially when driving. The guild or show will not be responsible for his food or additional hotel expenses.

Lodging & Food: The guild will be responsible for all lodging and food for Kathy away from home, including meals en route. She prefers a private room in a hotel (non-smoking, 1st floor accommodations, no outside door access). In order to simplify accounting, a $40 per diem will be assessed for meals on days when they are not provided by your group.

Sharing With Other Guilds: To help save travel expenses, guilds often share Kathy during her trips. The guilds will equally share her travel expenses and be responsible for transporting Kathy between cities. The individual groups will be responsible for lodging and meals when Kathy is in their area.

Advertising: All advertising of Kathy's services will be the responsibility of the sponsoring guild, shop, museum or show. Kathy will provide information that may be used for advertising purposes

Further Information: For further questions, please feel free to contact Kathy by email or phone. Kathy still has openings in 2008 and is now booking for 2009.
